Camping near Toronto

The closest I've heard about is Glen Rouge Campground, Kingston Rd. (Hwy. 2) east of Sheppard Ave. E., Just on the eastern boundry of the Toronto Metro Area which makes downtown accessable via the Sheppard Bus stop (1KM from the camping site) for info, call 905-713-6007; for campground reservations, call 416-338-2267
Then comes a provincial park/campground (Darlington) just off Hwy 401 east of Toronto, at around exit 425. The park is just south of highway 401. It's also beside the major east-west rail corridor going into Toronto. It's not exactly a quiet nature setting, but it's right on Lake Ontario and the park is clean. They also provide large spots for motorhomes with electricity.Check ontarioparks.com for more details. If you didn't want to drive all the way to downtown Toronto, you could drive to Pickering and catch a GO train. Parking is free, and the train takes you right to the Molson Indy site. Check gotransit.com for schedules and hours of operation. The Oshawa station is closer, but it isn't served on weekends. The drive to Downtown is around a 45 minutes drive in non-rush hour. This campground is about 15 minutes from Mosport Park Raceway, which is exit 430. I see there's also Yogi Bear`s Jellystone Park & Camp-Resort at R.R. #1, Hwy. 400 & Simcoe Rd. 88, L3Z 2A4. It's approximately 70KMs/45MIs from the city but travel at a busy time could take over 1.5 hrs. Let me know if you find something closer.

Entertainment
FIND Toronto Venues, Show, Concert & Sports Tickets including tickets for events at the Royal Alexandria, Air Canada Center, Masey Hall, Kool Haus, Hummingbird Center, Opera House, Princess of Wales Theatre, Canon Theatre, and Rogers Center (Blue Jays)

check out the Toronto Entertainment District Website: http://www.toronto.com/
Movies: Each September, Toronto is home to it's own International Film Festival but the film culture doesn't stop there as to be expected in a sophisticated cultural hub. Much like Melbourne and Montreal the city is host to many fine cinemas showing films from all over the world. And it's own Ontario Cinemateque see http://www.e.bell.ca/ for more info. Regular popular films (in English) also show all over downtown. For listings see the Toronto Star Newspaper: http://www.toronto.com/
Casinos? None downtown, but a particularly Ontarian phenomenon is the "racino", a combination gambling establishment/horse racing track. The closes example is Woodbine Racing Slots: http://www.woodbineentertainment.com/. Good Luck.
Go Carts: At The Docks, downtown: http://www.thedocks.com/
Restaurants/Clubs/Cafes:
All over the entertainment district to the West of Central Union Station, you'll find great restaurants, almost too many to choose from. If you're into Chinese food, you're in luck! Toronto is the second biggest host of residents of Hong Kong Chinese decent in the world. The first, is another Canadian city, and grandprixcity, Vancouver. You'll find many of these restaurants in the Path underground shopping complex. Or if prefer high over low, you can choose a restaurant in the highest building in the world, the CN tower. With 5,000 registered restaurants in this thriving city, several with international reputations, you'll never be short of a place to eat in the T.O!
My personal favorite is the KIT KAT (family Italian cooking on West King Street) and the coffee after made by espresso maestro, Joanna Dionisopoulos, is to die for. Tell her I sent you!
Check out also the Italian district on College (a street car from downtown) for a great selection in a nice atmosphere.

Tipping & Taxes: Expected. Usually you'll round up your bill 15%, whether this is pre or post tax is the subject of much debate...
State Sales Tax: Taxes are divided into 8% Provincial Sales Tax (PST) and a 7% federal Goods and Services Tax (GST). Which, at a total of 15%, called the Harmonized Sales Tax, makes it as disagreeable as sales tax in New York State. Visitors from outside Canada who have spent a ton of money (there's lots of restrictive rules) can claim a rebate of these taxes. To check out the rules and see how to enjoy this benefit visit the Canadian Customs and Revenue website.

Road Advisories Local road work / construction / tolls / traffic?:
> Have an alternate route planned if you're looking to travel along the 401 anytime during rush hour. The section of the 5-6 lane expressway almost grinds to a halt during busy periods. For information about road conditions and closures, see toronto.ca's special road closures page.
