Venue: SPA FRANCORCHAMPS CIRCUIT BELGIUM EUROPE
Dawn & Danny O'Rourke's Review of their trip to Spa-Francorchamps, August 29, 2004
Cvetko, Thanks for your advice regarding the GP @ Spa. As promised here is a summary of our experiences: We were lucky enought to get tickets for the GP. We set off from Blackburn (Lancashire ) UK and travelled by coach to Dover, On the ferry to Calais and back onto the coach through to Liege. (Sounds horrendous, it was!) We got the train to Verviers and through to Spa. There was a bus to ferry people from the train station to and from the circuit. Then a 45 minute walk to the circuit, although we could have made it faster but the stalls and bars on the way there was a great atmosphere the torrential rain did not dampen our spirits. We arrived at the muddy circuit around 11.00am and did not take long before we were knee deep in mud. The facilities were appauling for Bronze ticket holders, the portable toilets were the worst I have ever seen no wonder everywhere you looked there was somebody taking a leak on trees,in the tunnels, anywhere in fact! The Belgians tossed their rubbish were they stood and it was not long before the whole of the circuit looked like a rubbish tip, (And stunk like one too.) This attracted the wasps in droves. The track action on Saturday was awesome and purely because we were such fans of F1 we could turn a blind eye to the lack of facilities. We stayed in Brussels on Saturday night which meant a few hours on a train but they were very reliable. The Stop trains would wait for connecting trains if they were late and this made our journey easy and trouble free. On Sunday (Race day) we made our way back to Spa and could not believe it when it was shut - Yes Spa appeared to be ghost town, no taxi's, no buses, no shops open, no sign of life. As the circuit was about 8 KM from Spa we were concened about how to get to the circuit, we met a few people who were all in the same boat we were. They rang a couple of taxi's but these did not turn up, We ended up getting a bus because the driver assured us he could drop us near the circuit and just a 5 Minute walk away - What he actually meant was a 6 KM walk. The time was ticking away and we had already missed the start at this time, we were desperate by now and even started to hitchike, lucky for us a taxi pulled up and took us to the circuit as near as he could, we then ran the rest of the way and finally arrived at the circuit at around 3.00pm, needless to say we had missed most of the action. If anyone is planning to go the Belgian GP my advice is DONT - Unless you have Gold or at the very least Silver tickets don't bother, we were sheparded like peasants through the mud and rubbish, with thousands of people leaving the circuit at the same time through small tunnells was a frightening experience, Somebody in their wisdom had build a scaffold spectators stand on the exit of the tunnel this was an accident waiting to happen, no lighting in the tunnel, thousands of people trying to get through. There were children who were terrified as well as the adults, added to the stench of people using it as a toilet was all in all a disgusting, disorganised mess, not what I would expect when coming to a F1 circiut the pinnacle of motorsport (What a joke!) - That said, we're both still huge F1 fans and thouroughly enjoyed the atmosphere, the noise, the cars, the race and better still, the outcome!!!!
