"Its like rubbing sandpaper on your tires. Rockingham is in the sand hills of NC, and I guess the sand has taken its toll on the track surface. The track is very abrasive - you will see teams changing as many tires as they can throughout the race." (February 2002)
Rusty Wallace, #2 Miller Lite Dodge Intrepid:
"It’ll be the same story as always at Rockingham, "tire management," says Wallace, whose classic slip-sliding battles on the track with the late Dale Earnhardt some 15 seasons ago are now legendary. "The surface is just so abrasive there that four-tire stops are mandatory and that’s always been the case. It usually comes down to who has their car handling the best on old tires at the end that wins the thing.." (February 2004)
