Spielberg Austria Circuit Re-Opens as the RED BULL RING!
Great Great News that the former Spielberg Austria Circuit, my most favorite race travel destinations on the planet (by far) is to reopen for business on April 1, 2011. It's new owner Deitrich Mateschitz (owner and founder of RED BULL energy drinks) has spent About 100 million dollars to renovate the former A1 Ring and bringing it back to today´s standards. In 2011 the DTM - German Touring Car Masters race from 3rd to 5th June will be the highlight, but who knows what the future might hold? Including perhaps Formula 1 Racing in Austria again. I sincerely hope so. There isn't a formula one race planned as yet, but I (we, all European Racing Fans) can ony hope. Apart from that about 15 different racing events will be held place Austrian Historic Automobiles Cup, Historic F1, Formula Renault 2, Supermoto Intercup, Ducati Masters, ADAC GT Masters (German GT Championship), Formula 2, Ferrari Challenge, Porsche Alpenpokal and Austrian 500 miles Endurance Challenge. in celebration, I've reoppened my Red Bull Ring Spielberg Austria Circuit Travel Guide Page ! Excited!

Finally a Candadian Grand Prix is On!!!
Took forever and a load of negotiations but the Canadian Grand prix in Montreal has been added to the Formula 1 Calendar for 2010 (check the date) . See my Montreal Guide via "montreal link in this paragraph and search out hotels near Montreal Gilles Villeneuve Circuit or find all Canada and Montreal Hotels at city hotels index. Not surprised at all about the announcement. The Canadians love their drama, and Montreal tourism business couldn't bleed money any more, with this recession as well. If every politician in Quebec had to mortgage their house to fund the race, the race would return to Montreal - or they wouldn't be politicians for very much longer. Local business would see to that.

A visitor to grand prix cities wrote and asked me a few questions about heading over to Assen TT Circuit Netherlands (Holland) for the MotoGP a few week's ago and I helped all I could. I asked him, like I ask everyone, to send me a few pics of his travels and to add a few tips about getting to and from the track. Well he did. Here's Darin from South Africa's Letter about his visit to 2009 Assen MotoGP. His first trip to a MOTOGP event. Lucky man, he even met Valentino Rossi after the champ's 100th MotoGP Victory (pic)

A grand prix for Montreal in 2009? Maybe still a chance.
I've seen articles stating that the inaugural Formula 1 Grand Prix (Dates) of Abu Dhabi might not be ready to run on it's sheduled starting date of November 1, 2009 and that this might make room for a return to the F1 Calendar of the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal. Listen carefully. I hear the major of Montreal was in some very serious talks with the Ernie about the possibility of subbing for the Abu Dhabi event.
April 2009 Motorsport dates.
On the hotels near big ticket venues blog I've put up a list of the big motorsport events in April 2009 with links to all the guides, hotels and everythig else you might need if you're going.

I'd love for someone to write a little about these races too, Canada, South Africa, Italian Superbikes... Who'll chime in?
Local Traffic Weather Radar Radio Stations Update
In other website news, I've spent a bunch of time updating my Local Traffic Weather Radio Stations page at grand prix cities and even put together an Airports weather Radar Forecast page at Hotels near the airport.com . Both of these lists are USA only for now, but if you'd like to contribute information about your local traffic radio station, (anywhere in the world) I'd be excited to put together an international version, and not just for the big Motorsport / Sports Travel Destinations, if there's a venue, then you need local traffic radio to help you avoid construction and other hazards ahead on the road. .

Happy Holidays from Grand Prix Cities
Looking forward to 2009 and a full racing calendar! All the very best to you and yours from me and mine.
Detroit Grand Prix IRL Cancelled - Car companies pull out of event - poor economy.
I won't be the only one glad to see this 2008 year over with in a hurry. With all the bad economic news around it came as no surprize that it was announced that the Detroit Grand Prix at Belle Isle Circuit has been cancelled for 2009. This effects the IRL Indy Car Calendar . The decision to scrap the race for lack of corporate sponsorship, is really sad for ALMS American Le Mans Series which used the event as a valuable promotional opportunity in front of the Motor City's Auto Industry. The Detroit Grand Prix featuring IRL racing only returned to the island for 2 visits, after a long break, before that ChampCar left the venue, disappointed with the lack of any real pit facilities, complete lack of interest in open wheel racing in the locale, and flagging support from a, then, stong, auto industry. Back in the day of course, in the 80s F1 racing roared around Detroit's downtown, less than a mile from the Belle Isle Circuit. Thems were the days.
Racing Returns to Imola Circuit Enzo e Dino Ferrari Italy 2009 WSBK.
After an absence of racing for 2 years, it is announced that the World Superbike Championship will visit Imola Circuit on September 27 2009! This is great news. See you there. Visit either of the above links for Hotels near Imola for the 2009 event. . Find all Racing Dates for the 2009 season and find Italy Tickets.
Jim McConnell passes at 95 - grand father of motor sports in Maine
Sad news that on Thursday the 4th of December, 2008 saw the passing of Jim McConnell. He ws 95 years old and considered the grandfather of motorsport in Maine. You'll find a short obituary at the end of the Maine Motorsport directory. RIP.

A1GP travels to Australia - steals Gold Coast Race - Great move!
Great news comes that A1 Grand Prix World Cup of Motorsport is to spread its wings still further and fly to Australia, where it will be the feature event for 2009's Gold Coast Indy. The fun of the Surfers Paradise track proved too much for the IRL Series after only one "demonstration" event, done more to prove that it didn't squash champ car, really, and when the Indy guys turned down the now legendary car-breaking track for 2009, A1GP moves in, further solidifying it as the race series to watch in the future.
A1 GP is proving true to its promise to provide world class equal engine racing and creating a buzz around the world with fans flocking to support their country's at some of the best venues around the world, including Brands Hatch, taking up the mantle from Champ Car but far exceeding it's scope and potental to create interest. At first everyone thought A1GP was trying be a second rate F1 for the off season, but after proving that it could provide "real racing", the kind of sillyness provided by the "pinnacle of motorsport" in recent years, where "no one wanted the championship" that only 2 cars could win, and even making F1 start mincing words about "same engine racing", A1 seems set to "spank" the more expensive girls' potooties.
Encouraging a greater fan base in Australia, one of the most motorsports crazy countries in the world, might just do it. Well done, good move A1! If you haven't had a chance to experience A1GP seek it out. It really is something else, something seriously else. See you in Surfers Paradise Australia
Portland and Cleveland Grand Prix 2009?
News also comes that there is a chance that the Grand Prix of Cleveland may still have chance in 2009. After abandoning Surfers Paradise to A1GP, the IRL Indy Car Series is currently talking withthe city about adding it to the 2009 schedule, there is also some talk about Portland International Raceway again seeing racing in 2009.
Watch my IRL Schedule and world racing dates pages for updates as the winter passes.
October 2008
Canadian GP for 2009 Axed?
Holy Hot Tamale. Just as I'd put up my 2009 provisional F1 dates the news comes like a storm that Montreal's Gilles Villeneuve Circuit is to lose the Canadian Formula 1 Grand Prix. and that no one else in North America is going to get it! Stay tuned for more. This kind of news has happened before of course, and at the last minute, some local politician, with friends in high places, has come out smelling roses for saving the day. Up until recently Montreal (hotel owners - the only people who prosper by the event & boy do they prosper) have been calm with the stated agreement that the city will keep the event until 2011. Maybe all this has changed. Maybe everyone who matters in F1, all 2 of them, had too good a time in Singapore while the western world's economy went belly up. Sacre bleu!
....

My bud Henry Jones who has loads to do with The Augusta Intl Raceway Preservation society writes to tell me they're prepping for the 5th Annual Augusta Vintage Nationals in September. They've also installed plaques in the "5Wkids Outdoor Learning Area" at Motorsports Memorial Plaza located at the former track that is being developed into Diamond Lakes Memorial Park. The plaques commemorate 2 other historic motorsport venues, North Wilksboro Speedway and Riverside International Raceway Riversdale California. FIM Red Bull Motocross of Nations at Donington Park - After fears that Britain would lose a round of the FIM Red Bull Motocross of Nations when it lost the Moneyglass Desmene round in Northern Ireland, Donington Park Circuit in the East Midlands area took over the event. Dates for the Donington Round are 27-28 September, 2008. I might even make the trip out there myself. Donington Park is a premier British racing venue and this new event only adds to its prestige, adding to the track's schudule already jewelled with W-SBK, MotoGP and more.... COMPLIMENTS TO THE CHEF January starts out nicely with a lovely rap up by a member of Speed TV Insider Forum which lists my guide to Spa Francorchamps as an excellent resource for folks traveling there for the belgian grand prix. Thanks de-oppresso-liber!
SINGAPORE FORMULA ONE GRAND PRIX All seems set for the first Formula One night race (only 700 years after Champ Car did it in Cleveland), but hey, I guess it takes a long time to negotiate overtime salaries with the world's "best drivers", even though some of them are only 18. I know Sebastien Bourdais will have an advantage, having slogged it out in those tough minor leagues for so many years. Good luck to Sebastien in his first year in the "premier class". He has nothing to prove but everything to gain. Bon Chance, my streetfighting friend, don't get soft! Oh yeah, find a Singapore Hotel, if you're going, and send a picture / report.
AUTOSHOWS AND MOTORCYCLE SHOWS My travels start this year with a trip to Detroit to check out the Cycle World International Motorcycle Show to be held at Rock Financial Showplace in Novi on Jan 4-6, 2008, say hi if you see me. I'll be drooling over the new 2008 motorbikes there, particularly the Ducati 848 Superbike. After that it's Chicago for a week and back to Detroit for the NAIAS North American International Autoshow where I'm hoping to get another look at one of them new Chevy Camaro Concept Vehicles, which I fell in love with during the Transformers Movie. Come to me Bumblebee... (in 2009?)

vintage racing Mustang to a gentleman in Europe and converted that Domain to
the non-profit project here in Augusta involving the former Augusta

success with the memorial effort which sits in Motorsports Memorial Plaza (see pic) at
