2 Jason Leffler (sup) #0 Net Zero car (2003)
Jason Leffler will have reason to remember his motorsport travel to Brooklyn, Michigan. The weekend of the 17th and 18th of August 2003 marked his first outing in a fully fledged NASCAR Winston Cup vehicle.
The young Californian just at the begining of his career, with only a year of NASCAR Craftsman Trucks racing behind him, was supping in the #0 NetZero car for an injured John Andretti. At the time I spoke with him on Saturday afternoon, he'd just qualified 6th outright against a very distinguished crowd of experienced drivers. Understandably, he was beaming. And why wouldn't he be? Even if this was a Pontiac and his truck was a Dodge.
"I like the sun and the beach, I'm pretty much a beach guy," he said, true to his Californian upbringing, "So I'm happiest when I know Fontana is coming up on the Trucks calendar. I get a chance to go to Rodondo Beach out there in California and that's just great, and only 45 minutes away in the other direction are the mountains, which I enjoy a great deal. In fact any place you want to go is only an hour or so from there. I'm originally from there so I know it all well and really enjoy it. The whole of Southern California is a hot bed of motorsports and hot rods, including of course Pomona with it's hot rodders. It's very cool there. I live in South Carolina now, which is also a big motor center but but when you go to Southern California you realize just how nuts people can be about cars."
I asked him like I ask all drivers the bruning question. And do you go out much when you're on the road. Usually the answer is not a lot, which is always a little sad, but Jason's face lit up as if remembering stories.
"Yeah, we go out a lot when we're on the road. The trucks run Memphis and Nashville and so there's great music in Nashville because of the country music scene and in Memphis there's Beale Street and both have great food.
And Jason's favorite place to race?
"I like Pikes Peak International Raceway. it's a very different kind of track as turns one and two are higher than turns 3 and 4 and that makes it real interesting to drive."
