An excerpt from a letter sent regarding travel to Lemans for the 2004 French Moto Grand Prix
I sat in a VIP box, there is also a photo of that in the pictures I will be posting. The view was pretty good, but all of the VIP boxes were quite a way in front of the starting grid, so the only people with an excellent view of the starting grid were those on the west side and furthest south front straight grandstands. I also walked around the track, and it is typical of any track of this sort - there are a few good spots to watch here and there, but you really only see a couple of corners, and the best place to see the race is on TV. Fortunately, in the VIP boxes they have several TV's that you can watch the race on and see all parts of the track. In Australia, there were big screen TV's for the fans in the grandstands (I've seen this at some F1 races as well), but in LeMans I don't think they had the big-screens, so you were out of luck that way. My recommendation if someone is planning a big trip is always the VIP tickets. I spent $7500 Cdn on my whole 2 week trip to Europe including gifts etc, so to me, $440 Cdn on VIP tickets was a small portion of the overall expense, and if you are travelling between continents, it is worth the extra money to enhance the experience. You also get "insurance" against extreme heat or cold and rain - being in a VIP box gives you food, shelter, drinks, etc, and makes the experience much more enjoyable if the weather turns bad.
The TGV from Paris was about 1 hour and cost about 100 euros each direction for a first class ticket. My VIP tickets cost 263 euros for one, includes a parking spot and all three days at the track, and breakfast and lunch on Sunday in your suite. If you arrive the first day, you can go on a walk through the paddock area where the trailers are. I somehow missed this, but was able to go for two hours on Saturday afternoon. We also got to go on a pit lane tour on Sunday morning before the 500 race, which is where I got my close up shots of the garages and bikes. My hotel was the Kyriad 2, which was in the north part of LeMans on the opposite side of the city from the track, so I was paying 25-30 euros each way for a cab - pretty expensive. I would recommend the city centre for a hotel, as I didn't see anything much between the city centre and the track, but I could be wrong. Anything on the south side of the city would be not bad. I could have been worse off though, some people had to stay in neighboring towns or cities after LeMans hotels filled up, so at least I didn't have to travel that far each day.
