> Is there camping at the Hungaroring Circuit racetrack?

Yep. You can camp right beside the track. There's a cost. Changes yearly. It's part of the parking provisions.

Hungary Entry Tips:

TIPS: Enter via the airport, not by road/rail. I'd have pics on this page but for some over-zealous Hungarian border Customs Guards, who seemed not to have heard the Berlin wall had come down when I visited the Hungary in 2001. Also, residents of a handful of countries, including Australia, require visas to enter Hungary. It's easier to get these in your home country than while on the road. LOCAL TRANSIT / TRANSFERS TO THE TRACK The track offers loads of parking and camping (see below) but traffic is shocking (& in the HEAT) ! A shuttle bus is available from downtown to the circuit, catch it on the Pest side of ?rp?d-Bride from early til late. It's Free if you have an ticket for the Hangarian Grand Prix. A train runs to the circuit every 30mins from 4h30. Costs: 200HUF. Helicopter from Budapest to the track, however, is a serious option:
NOTE: On busses trains in town, VALIDATE, your ticket. You will be fined.

> What else is there to do?

Try to avoid being ripped off. Tourist frauds abound in Budapest during the Grand Prix weekend. One when the city is most open to foreign visitors in one big shot. Horror Stories abound about tourist traps in bars, via "guides who take you to these bars", and the price it costs to get out of one without being beat up. Pity the actions of bad characters spoil the reputation of such a pretty city, which for the most part welcomes the "glam" that is (was) F1

>Local Currency: Hungarian Forint - HUF) TIP: Buy your Forint from your bank at home to save on high tourist conversion fees. Draw local money from ATMs. see also, if you're interested, my page of Currencies of the world

> TIPPING: Not expected. Where you're impressed with the service, you'll usually round up the bill 10%.. Careful this hasn't already been 'presumed' in your bill.

AT THE TRACK

At the 2003 event, for example, full weekend grandstand ticket holders may take a pit walk on Thursday before the F1 event free! A grandstand ticket will also get you free parking ? many children's tickets (under 18) are reduced by up to 50% to get rid of them. See official race website for full details. If you can work out what is the official website on any given year. It changes like the wind. Good luck.

> Museum hopping?

Check out this List of Museums in Budapest - pst... get a "Hungary Card".

Shopping: A long shopping street stretches for miles across town, Vaci Utca (Vaci Street), similar to the way Rue Ste. Catherine does in Montreal, or like La Rambla in Barcelona . On V?ci, of course, you'll find no end of bohemian wares. Budapest is where European Bohemia (& its excesses) began. No wonder there was a revolution! See notes on tipping and money.

In Budapest Take time to see

> Aquaworld Budapest Water Themepark. Located right by the Hungaroring. check out Hotels near Aquaworld Budapest and other world themeparks.
> Janos Hill (Chairlift to view of city)
> Buda Castle - featuring both architecturally and in exhibits the history of art in the city.
> A Thermal spa bath - ie. G?llert Hotel
> St. Stephen's Basilica (1845) & the Saint's mummified hand, which a security guard will flip a light switch and show you for 200HUF (around $1USD)

Tips - Do/Don't

1) Take plenty cold to drink. It is almost always always horrendously hot in August on raceday! Except for 2002, when the weather was bearable, but the city was flooding
2) don't wear contact lenses, the dust around the rarely used Hungaroring is crazy, and when the dust and heat get together (it was 40C/100+F in 2000, for example) it can make for a very uncofortable day!
3) Beware pretty women who speak English who are too keen to invite you to have a drink with them. You will be robbed in the bar. This scam fools thousands of international visitors to this city every week! Crime is rampant and city pride is low amongst the underworld.
4) Keep your eyes open for the dates of the Szieget Pepsi Island Summer festival. It rocks.
5) Stay on an extra day or 2 for the st. peter's day festival Mid-Late AUgust.
6) British Commonwealth citizens & some others need a visitor's visa. ask your local embassy.
7) BEWARE forged event tickets online. Buy from official sources only.
8) BE SENSIBLE, stay amongst people, hold tight to your wallet/purse, avoid "too good to be true" offers & HAVE FUN!

A FEW NOTES ABOUT HUNGARORING AND BUDAPEST

Budapest is 2 cities joined, Buda & Pest, either side of the Danube River and linked by the famous Elizabeth & Chain bridges. I liked Buda, but Pest is faster. It's quite a cool place, full of a strange need to create and keep up with trends, visable on many street corners, but also filled with a dire neglect and greyness from the years behind the iron curtain. The only way I can describe it is Euro pastiche gone insane. Five different empires sat in Budapest through the eons & it shows. The Hungaroring, used so seldom during the year, is one big dust bowl during it's major event. Heat is often an issue, as is poor planning for fan requirements, like cold drinks to counter this heat, and the world's worst traffic management (Old Silverstone conditions were a holiday compared to the situation here and it certainly ain't the Monaco Grand Prix. The views the circuit offers however, in its natural amphitheater, are amongst some of the best in international motorsports, comperable to Austria's A1-Ring.
