Champ Car drivers discuss their favorite grandprixcities™
Paul Tracy - #3 Player's/Indeck Team
I met with Paul Tracy on the pit road moments after he'd gotten out of his car after Saturday morning practice during the Toronto Molson Indy Grand Prix. He'd had a miserable time of testing and had already put on his civilian clothing before practice had concluded. Still, I was lucky to have some of his time. In Toronto, local boy, Paul Tracy, who they refer to as "The Thrill from West Hill", was on the top of everyone's interview list.
It had rained, it was chilly, there were a line of cameras waiting to do interviews so I had to be brief. "What's your favorite race city to visit on the tour?" I asked the latest elder statesman of the series.
"Surfer's Paradise, just outside of Brisbane Australia is a great place to visit." Again I remembered what they, the drivers, had to look forward to - the beaches, the Miss Indy finals, a week off in paradise to get over jet lag.
"Toronto and Vancouver, Canada are also great destinations for me." And he had made Toronto an even better place for hundreds of friends, and many of his competitors, in a huge charity party that he hosted at Gretzky's - Wayne Gretzky's Restaurant in the entertainment district of downtown Toronto the night before.
And before his time at Champ Car? Paul was quick to remind me with more than suggestion that there could be no before or after Champ Car. He was the elder statesman on the series and in all interviews I'd seen him give, he proudly held up the banner for the Series. "I've been racing CART now for 13 years," he said, stressing his seniority, "I didn't get to travel as much during the junior formulas in Canada."
And your favourite place to race? "Elkhart Lake. It doesn't have much of a town or nightlife aroud it but it's pretty much the driver's favorite track." (NOTE: Patrick Carpentier told me the same thing)
At that moment the next interview crew moved in, took over my place, and set Paul off on another topic all together. Something much more controversial, I suspect, if Paul was being his usual Paul.
