Patrick Carpentier - #32 Player's/Indeck Team
I caught up with Patrick Carpentier after the podium interviews at the Cleveland Grand Prix. It was a night race so he was tired. It was the 5th of July and a special set of fireworks was exploding in the air over Cleveland to mark the end of a very happy race weekend for everyone there.
While not completely satisfied with 3rd place (which race driver ever is?) Patrick seemed relieved to talk about something other than gears and ratios for a few minutes, and to reflect on how lucky he'd been to visit so many places. He, like other ChampCar drivers interviewed, said that he loved his time in Surfer's Paradise every year, partly because the lag time ahead of the event, to allow for jet lag, gave him time to enjoy the beaches, the sea, and to take a few great mountain bike treks, taking his exercise regimin out of the gym.
He was very complimentary also about his Canadian homeland city of Vancouver and Montreal, a place where he had grown up watching Formula One Champions race around the Isle Gilles Villeneuve, and the grandprixcity closest to his hometown of Ville Lasalle, Quebec. Patrick particularly likes the cafes and restaurants in these towns.
He included that he always enjoyed his time in Cleveland, which was as down to earth a city as he had ever been in, and that the fan response was always excellent and lively.
Finally I asked him about his favorite track for racing. There was no doubt in his voice. "Road America. There wasn't much of a city or a night life in the circuit area but the track is unbeatable."
