It's a pretty town with a historic "main street" block, and all the fast food businesses you can think of. During race weekends however car traffic is so heavy that people find it difficult to get into town, unless they have a bicycle or walk (really, it's not that far). Many of the regular stores actually find that the race weekends are not their biggest sales days and close because the throng of people at the event, catered for closer to the circuit by makeshift vendors, never make the trip to the town. So much for racing helping a local economy! A shuttle may be an answer, but again there's the traffic. So it's a good idea to pack that truch with things you'll need. Some 15 miles from the circuit is the town of Jackson, which also caters for race fans during race weeks with its raceweek, which includes driver appearances and festivals to temp your tourism dollars. Check it out. Fact remains that the town of Brooklyn is there, not that far away and, personally, I couldn't imagine spending mounds of money visiting a location without taking in as much of it as possible. Here's a run down of what you'll find if you stray from the circuit area: Movies: Unfortunately the pretty movie house in the Brooklyn main street was borded in and up for sale last time I was there. Pity, too many of these lovely places are dying. Shopping: The stores in town are often closed for race weekends because of the difficulties with traffic and the one way system. You will however get a chance to poke around if you arrive early. Check out the many resale and antique stores in the general Irish Hills area. For example, Loretta Lynne's (not that one) Used Furniture Store on M50 in Vandercook, around 18 miles from the Speedway. Casinos? Deck of cards and a flashlight? Don't know. Suggestions welcome. There is a harness racing track in Jackson Zoo??? Go Carts: right next to Shoopers on M50, is a very popular Victory Lane go kart track. More popular after more beer! Eat: Eating at an American race event boils (or broils down) to the age old tradition of tail-gating, that is throwing everything capable of consumption into the biggest possible cooking machine, with beer used as beverage, batter, and flavor, and making a show of it too! If you're a tailgating titan with some kick ass recipes, send them in via the contact link left. Fast food concessions kiosks abound in the circuit grounds and in the town of Brooklyn. Try Shooper's too, on M50, just 2 miles from the track, although expect it to be busy as their expanded "back yard" drinking area is hugely popular on race weekend Friday and Saturday nights. For the uninitiated Jerky is smoked, cured, and spiced meat product. All/any meats will work. More exotic varieties include venison, bear, turkey, and I wouldn't be surprised, "road kill". It's like cabana dried to the texture of Shoe leather. Spicy, perfect with Beer, and sold from dispensers on counter in almost every store in Michigan. in Brooklyn, MI, take time to see > Stage Coach Stop Fun Park Great thing for kids to do in the area is visit the Michigan Space Center. (pic) & see the huge engines like the kind that powered space missions. Each has a sign (all be they rusty) proclaiming them a "national treasure". Inside is a gift store and a planetarium type set up, where you can stare up at the sky and learn a little of the history of U.S. Space Exploration. > Yankee Air Museum (85KMs/50MIs) Willow Run Airport, Bellville Rd Exit 190, Interstate 94. For more links of general interest see the Official Village of Brooklyn Website See State of Michigan Tourism > Speed related stuff we got to check out nearby: > Outside of being a spectator at the events, the number 1 revhead thing to do at MIS is to take a ride yourself. My recent day at the Speedway was made complete with a few laps in an "almost" NASCAR with fast track racing. Check their site for details of their rates and dates at Michigan and other top rate circuits around the United States. I recommend you do your laps BEFORE lunch. And then there's the Victory Lane Go Kart Speedway next to Shooper's. I recommend you do your laps BEFORE you do your drinks. > Milan Dragway, Milan, Michigan, home of the IRHA™ Motor City Drag Racing Nationals (36MIs/58KMs) > Detroit 80 MIs/128KMs > For other circuits in Michigan, check out my listing of Michigan Racetracks Places of Worship ? > Liquor Laws: The legal drinking age in MIchgian is 21. >Local Currency: U.S. Dollar - Buy Currency your bank at home to save on high tourist conversion fees. But the southern influence isn't confined to the fact that twice a year NASCAR® racers turn laps at phenomenal speeds around the Michigan International Speedway, or that there are stores around like Loretta Lynne's Resale Furniture store (no, not THAT Loretta apparently), or that you'll see a Buddy's Mini-Mart and a Pamida Grocery Store (southern franchises following their crowd), and it's not the wild turkeys I saw wandering around the grounds by the circuit, reminding me of deeper Tennessee. There's something much more southern about the place, a warm hospitality that you won't find in Detroit, just 80 miles/125 kilometers to the east. It's that warm feeling that somehow summarizes and justifies my concentration this year on American race places. Whether its the historically popular resort area of the Irish Hills, the pretty historic main street of downtown Brooklyn, or the tailgating town you'll find in the campgrounds, infield and surrounding the circuit, that you're headed for, you'll find race fans who like race fans as much as they like racing! And that's a good thing! I was fortunate enough on my last visit to the circuit to catch up with the guys from fast track racing, which gave me the chance to see the speedway from an entirely different perspective, from a retired stock car, at 150+MPH. Now, that you should see! Draw straws, send the short straw on Monday before a Race to park the RV camper in a prime location, pack every barbeque cooking implement you've got, drive in Thursday night at the latest to avoid the traffic on the small country roads, take a bike to ride from the campground to the track or to town (2 miles), take time on Saturday night to take drinks in Shooper's (pic) back yard, and bring your red, white and blue, 'coz weez goin' racin'! Take a moment to read the grandprixcities™ legal disclaimer Godspeed on all your racing adventures, Cvetko Ostroznik WHO RACES AT MICHIGAN INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY > NASCAR (Nextel Cup) > NASCAR Craftsman Trucks >NASCAR National Series (formerly Busch) > IRL IndyCar ARCA World Snowmobile Association.
