However, Australian folk law is made of stories from the "top of the mountain" camping, which is definately NOT family oriented. You can get their (almost) but country rail, which is relatively quick and economical, but leaves a 4-5km walk (or taxi cab trip about AUS$6) to the circuit. In Early 2004, adult train tickets cost between AUD$39.60 and AUD$53.90, depending on class of service. The journey typically takes around 3.5 hours. > V8 Supercars > Best viewing at Mt. Panorama Circuit:There are no permanent grandstands on Mount Panorama. Basically there are many viewing areas around the 6km track, but bring your walking shoes, because some of the best are way up the montain (best accessed by car). The best offtrack action (drunken shenanigans) occurs on top of the mountain, whilst best areas for more family oriented visitors would be closer to the pits area. There are plenty of other viewing areas, but bring a nice rug to sit on as they are mainly grassy (in summer dusty) natural inclines. > Wanna be a volunteer race marshall at a classic Bathurst Race?Visit Confederation of Australian Motorsports (CAMS) > Want to race in the 24hour?For around $10,000 AUD you can enter a car into the race. Related Pages / A few more notes:> Back in the 19 ... no I won't tell you which decade... I spent a very memorable weekend camping, perched on a mountain, getting sunburnt, learning to consume Australian beer, and watching one of the most phenomenal road races I've ever had the pleasure of witnessing. The big race was called the Hardie-Ferodo 1000 back then. Now there are 2 huge events annually on the Mt. Panorama Circuit, which features a famous corkscrew called "the cutting", more amazing than the oneS at Laguna Seca or phillip island's Lukey Heights To bring us up to speed and up to date with tips for travel to the Great Australian Race and the circuit that hosts it, I've enlisted the help of grandprixcities contributor, motorsport enthusiast, and Australian club racer, Dane Latham. His contributions include Aussie V8 Supercar destinations, Eastern Creek and Oran Park, as well as Wakefield Park, all of which he's had the oportunity to drive on. As always, contributions are welcome from anyone with experience of a destination. If you've been to this "place that hosts a race" before or are going this year, use the contact link right and let me know any tips or tricks you think might benefit a race fan. Every little drop of info can only help. Have fun on the mountain! One year soon I hope very much to visit it again. Now that I'm older and wiser.
